Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
