This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
