EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
